Periods of Daily Fasting Improves Health Outcomes in Mice

We know that obesity presents a major health challenge in the United States, as well as many other developed countries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States, more than one-third of adults and 17 percent of youth are considered obese. Obesity presents increased health risks for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, among other things.

While we know that lifestyle modifications, including daily exercise and consumption of a healthy diet, are the primary approaches to weight loss and control, sometimes that does not seem to be enough to battle the bulge and resolve the health issues relative to excess weight.

Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have learned something very interesting which suggests that when we eat may be just as important as what we eat. They performed a study with mice that showed that having regular eating times and extending the fasting period to 16 hours had a positive impact on the health of the mice. They believe that such a diet could override the negative health effects of a high-fat diet, prevent obesity, diabetes and liver disease in mice, and hopefully in humans as well.

 “The Salk study found the body stores fat while eating and starts to burn fat and breakdown cholesterol into beneficial bile acids only after a few hours of fasting. When eating frequently, the body continues to make and store fat, ballooning fat cells and liver cells, which can result in liver damage. Under such conditions the liver also continues to make glucose, which raises blood sugar levels.”

Fasting can be uncomfortable if we have stored toxins, in this case cholesterol.  It is important that we know that this process of cleansing the body, in addition to improving long term physical health, is extremely beneficial to long term mental clarity and optimism.  Thus, when we feel discomfort from fasting it is a sign of deep healing.

“The daily feeding-fasting cycle activates liver enzymes that breakdown cholesterol into bile acids, spurring the metabolism of brown fat — a type of “good fat” in our body that converts extra calories to heat. Thus the body literally burns fat during fasting. “

When people feel cold, fasting may increase their metabolism.

“The liver also shuts down glucose production for several hours, which helps lower blood glucose. The extra glucose that would have ended up in the blood — high blood sugar is a hallmark of diabetes — is instead used to build molecules that repair damaged cells and make new DNA. This helps prevent chronic inflammation, which has been implicated in the development of a number of diseases, including heart disease, cancer, stroke and Alzheimer’s. Under the time-restricted feeding schedule studied by Panda’s lab, such low-grade inflammation was also reduced.”

The Infratonic is extremely good at reducing inflammation.  (See photo below of horse hock before and after treatment with Infratonic therapy.)  However, it does not directly address the inflammation and tissue damage caused by elevated sugar levels.  The reduction of excess glucose in the blood from night time fasting reduces this dietary cause of inflammation.  Thus, where pain from inflammation fails to respond to the Infratonic, a little fasting combined with the Infratonic might just eliminate the pain.
