Giant Healthcare Provider Speaks Out on Biotech Health Dangers

Fotolia 43899083 XS resized 600The largest managed healthcare provider in the United States has bravely stood against Monsanto and publicly spoken out about the grave dangers of consuming GMO foods.

In a recent member newsletter, Kaiser Permanente cautioned its members to “limit exposure to genetically modified organisms…” They noted that “Independent research has found that several varieties of GMO corn caused organ damage in rats. Other studies have found that GMOs may lead to an inability in animals to reproduce.” And a new study has shown Monsanto’s weed killer, Roundup (the world’s bestselling weed killer) and a maize which has been genetically modified to be resistant to Roundup, have been shown to cause tumors, multiple organ damage, and premature death. See the full report of that study here.

Naturally, Kaiser Permanente has a vested interest in having its members avoid GMOs. Something which is so dramatically affecting people’s health also dramatically affects the cost of caring for them.

How to avoid GMOs? It is important to note that nearly 80% of processed foods, as well as most fast foods contain GMOs, so removing those from the diet is a great start.

Kaiser also recommends:

  1. Buy organic. All USDA Certified Organic foods are GMO-free.
  2. Avoid foods that contain nonorganic soy, corn, and canola or cottonseed oil
  3. Look for the “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal.
  4. Ask your local market. For example, Trader Joe’s produce and Trader Joe’s labeled foods are GMO-free; Whole Foods Market’s 365 Everyday Value products are sourced to be GMO-free.
  5. Download the ShopNoGMO app.
