Creating Easy & Effective New Year’s Resolutions

2012 with ribbons and confettiWith the Christmas holiday behind us and all of the added stress and pressure that often accompanies it, it is no wonder that the New Year has such appeal for a fresh start. It holds such promise for a clean slate, filled with possibility. For many people, that means making New Year’s Resolutions.

While we may be passionately committed to making and sticking to our resolutions when we set them, approximately 20% of people will revert to their pre-resolution behaviors and practices after about one month. By mid-year, over half of those who made resolutions will have given up on them, leading to personal disappointment and another year of dashed dreams.

Based on those statistics, it seems like it would make sense to just skip making resolutions, right? No, actually the answer is not to give up before you start by just avoiding making resolutions, but rather, to try a different approach to the way we have done it before. There is a phrase, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” So rather than starting out another year on the insanity treadmill, let’s explore some more effective options that can support us in making effective, lasting changes.
